New Kiosk

A cycle the Erie Canal bicyclist learns about cobblestone masonry.
Bill Lattin greets a Cycle the Erie Canal bicyclist that stopped by to learn about the schoolhouse and cobblestone masonry.

A new kiosk was installed in 2024. Bill Lattin and Rick Ebbs worked on the kiosk project.

The kiosk is located across the road from the Gaines Cobblestone Schoolhouse.

The kiosk can be seen from the towpath.  It provides information about the Orleans County Historical Association, the cobblestone schoolhouse and upcoming events.

Several years ago the group posted a sign on the towpath marking the .2 mile distance from the towpath to the Gaines Cobblestone Schoolhouse.  Bicyclists, boaters and walkers frequently use the towpath and some stop to view the schoolhouse.

This is the only cobblestone schoolhouse that can be viewed from the Erie Canal.

On July 14th, over 600 bicyclists traveled the Erie Canal from Medina to Fairport.  This was part of the weeklong Cycle the Erie Canal trip from Buffalo to Albany.

Bill Lattin greeted over 30 bicyclists that took the time to divert their bike route for a quick stop at the schoolhouse.  He shared the history of cobblestone masonry and structures, the schoolhouse and local history.
